The way my situation was handled, I'm not surprised that there are others who have received similar treatment. One interesting thing that I've been meaning to mention here is that in the week following this post going up, I saw at least ten hits specifically to this page that appeared to be from ad agencies, business consultants and others. It got someone's attention, and the link was passed around, but nothing came of it. Figures.

Bummer that your auction got pulled. Must've been a little too snarky for eBay's sensibilities. If you've still got the copy from the auction, feel free to stick it up here; I'd love to see what you put together! And I wouldn't mind hearing more about your experience with Samsung.

I too have experienced appalling customer service from Samsung...or rather, complete lack of service.
Here is my petty but satisfying comeback.

Alright, 72474460billy at msn dot com; I don't know exactly what to think about the comment you've left here twice (and I've marked as spam twice). But if you want me to leave it up for some reason, please write something more than an undecipherable string of code and "None..."

Until then, in my eyes you're a spammer and your comments will be treated as such. If you're a spy or a terrorist trying to use my obscure little blog to pass messages to your cohorts, find another venue dude. Sorry.

Just an update on this... In March we bought a different van (a 2005 Ford Freestar) and sold the Voyager. The dashboard worked flawlessly up to that point. I haven't heard anything from the new owner, but I'm thinking it's still working, and resoldering the connector really was the trick.

Serrill Thornton was my 3rd great-grandfather, so that makes us cousins of sorts. I have some more facts to fill in - though nothing to tell us about his character.

He was born in Burrillville, RI and grew up in Mendon, Rutland Co., VT, the eldest child of Jeremiah Thornton and Abigail Cowing. He married Sally Lyon and they had three children, including my great-great-grandfather Charles B. Thornton. Sally died in 1841 and is buried in Pittsford, VT.

He probably married his second wife, Hannah, while still in Vermont and in 1847 they moved to Schroon, Essex Co., NY, taking son Charles but leaving his two daughters to be raised by his parents. He and Hannah had three sons and were in Schroon during the 1850, 1860 and 1865 census. I was surprised to learn that son Serrill was born in Whitehall, as I'd had no indication they'd left Schroon.

Serrill enlisted in the 118th NY Volunteers in July 1862 for a 3-year-term. In August 1863 he fell during a march "in timber on a very dark night" in southern Virginia and suffered a "rupture" (hernia). He was hospitalized until the end of the year and again that following February. The hernia troubled him the remainder of his life.

Between 1865-1870 Serrill, Hannah and their three sons migrated to Dakota Territory. (My gg-grandfather Charles was already married and settled in Kingsbury, NY.) Hannah died in Elk Point in 1867, and by 1870 Serrill is in Sioux Valley with his son Jeremiah. In 1872 Serrill married Emily C. Warner in Fairview, Dakota Territory. She too had been widowed twice and had a grown son and a daughter. In 1876 Serrill received a land patent of 160 acres in Alcester, Union County, SD. Three years later son Jeremiah received two land patents of 80 acres each in Alcester.

About 1881 Serrill and Emily migrated from South Dakota to Iowa. In 1889 he filed for a Civil War pension, on the basis of a "right inquinal hernia and senility". He was issued a $12/month pension in 1892 retroactive from July 1890.

At age 83 he was 5 foot 9 inches tall and weighed 135 pounds. He had a light complexion and blue eyes. In addition to his other health issues by 1890 he also had "sore eyes" and "deafness".

His funeral and burial on Jan. 24, 1894 were officiated by Rev. Heber Gill, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Hawarden and chaplain of Mansfield Post, no. 159, District of Iowa, G.A.R.
