Spammers try all kinds of tricks to get their messages past filters. Some of the subject lines they come up with are just plain comical; like today I came across one entitled “Man in hot pants struts in boots, cheers city”, complements of the “I. Koehler - News Service”. Where the hey does that come from?
With that, I thought I ought to start keeping track of some of the doozies that come across the line. Oh, here’s another: “Neuwirth gets to ‘wiggle again’”, this time courtesy of one G. Nguyen of the super info potential News Service. Seems there is a slew of such messages coming in today, all touting some hot investment that is ready to hit the big time, the stock of which I simply must buy.

Thank goodness my comment spam on my blog isn’t as well-engineered as my e-mail spam. I get 100’s of spam messages per day, and almost all of them are for male enhancement drugs (hopefully this phrase isn’t caught by your filter, I figured if I used the actual drug name it would be).
The worst spam messages are the ones from friends where their computers have been taken over by a virus. “Hey, I thought you’d like this, pretty funny” is what a ton of them say. Thank goodness for virus scanners.

Well, they’re back, and they’ve got Extra Vim & Vigor enabled this time; 300 plus spam attempts in the last week. Every last one of them nailed by Akismet.
Just now there were two more that got nailed by Akismet, and the url (which I WILL NOT REVEAL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES) looked a little interesting, and slightly relevant to the post to which they were attached, so I checked it out; their hosting service had already pulled the plug on the site, and had a big “The entire collection is now under TOS closing - Due to mis-proper use of the hosting account — Service Unavailable!” page up in its place. Gotta love it!
They’re really hard at it now; over 1300 caught by Akismet now. A thousand in less than a month.
Come on guys. Is my obscure little corner of the web really worth that much effort? Knock it off!
I got an email from someone who calls himself (herself?) rojisan that had the following comment regarding the comment a couple of spots higher;
The plot grows thicker. Gotta hand it to these bozos; they are inventive.
By the way, Akismet has now caught 4,257 spam messages on my site. There haven’t been any new ones for several days. I’ve globally banned several IP addresses that showed up multiple times in Akismet; not sure if that helped or not, but I doubt it can hurt. I really, really like Akismet; where oh where would I be without it!
